Before you leave your present address
- Reading of gas meter, electric meter, & water meter.
- Cancel: telephone, diaper service, newspaper delivery, etc.
- Inform the utility companies where you will want the final bills mailed to.
- Have your refrigerator and other appliances serviced for the move.
- Write the utility company in the city to which you are moving. Ask them about necessary fees or deposits required for installation of services.
- Send change of address cards to your local post office, magazines, insurance companies, friends, and stores.
- Transfer your fire insurance on household goods or other insurance on personal possessions so that they will be covered at your new home en route.
- Notify the principle of your children’s school about your intended move. Get letter from him/her covering the status of your children in school.
- Notify pastor of your church that you are moving.
- Obtain birth records and baptism records of all family members.
- Get medical records of shots, eyeglass prescriptions, etc.
- Transfer your checking and savings accounts.
- Have your present bank arrange credit references for establishing new accounts in your new town.
- Arrange for sufficient cash or traveler’s checks to cover the cost of expenses until you make banking connections in the city to which you are moving.
- Leave keys for your old property with your Realtor or neighbors.
At your new address
- Check on service of telephone, gas, electricity, and water 3-4 days before moving.
- Have your stove serviced- check pilot light (if gas).
- Check pilot light on hot water heater and furnace.
- Have refrigerator, dishwasher, and television set checked.
- Ask mailman for mail he may be holding for your arrival.
- Have new address recorded on driver’s license.
- Visit county offices at least 30 days before the election and register for voting.
- Register car within 5 days after arrival in state or a penalty may have to be paid when getting new license plates.
- Register family in your new place of worship.
- Register children in school.
- Obtain and post a list of emergency telephone numbers.
- Open new checking and savings accounts locally.
- Locate new physician, dentist, and optometrist.
- Arrange for newspaper delivery.
